At the 2024 Wuhan International Conference on the Development of Digital and Intelligent Pathology, our project coordinator Matteo Negro and project partner Giulio Cerullo showcased CHARM’s recent technological advancements. The event, held on 30th June, brought together over 700 experts, including pathologists, researchers, and industry leaders, who shared and discussed the latest developments in digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI).
This was the first international gathering of pathology in Hubei, China, marking the launch of a new research and development organization dedicated to advancing digital pathology. It put the province on the map as a budding hub for medical technology innovation.
Matteo, who is also CEO at Cambridge Raman Imaging (CRI), was invited to present “Coherent Raman Microscopy for fast, objective, and accurate tumor diagnosis” to an audience of pathologists and field experts. He highlighted how his company’s technologies based on this advanced imaging technique can support clinicians with their ever-increasing workload. This technology is also central to our EU-funded project, which aims to revolutionize cancer diagnosis by providing pathologists with label-free, high-resolution digital images that can be easily analyzed.
While in Wuhan, Matteo and CRI co-founder Giulio Cerullo visited Wuhan Union Hospital and Wuhan Optics Valley, which is a growing center for optical technologies and medical devices. They witnessed firsthand how the region incorporates new pathology approaches into clinical practice and presented CHARM’s vision and technological benefits to local healthcare workers.
We can learn a lot from how Hubei is integrating digital intelligent pathology resources and infrastructure into their healthcare systems. Seeing so many pathologists and field experts interested in the benefits of CRI and CHARM’s technology was great. We are all moving in the right direction to provide the best tools to pathology experts to assist them in making accurate diagnoses and, ultimately, to ensure that patients receive timely diagnosis and treatment.

Joining this major event marks an important milestone in our mission to enhance human-based image processing diagnostics through innovative technology. Engaging with global pathologists and healthcare professionals allows CRI, and by extension, CHARM, to align its goals with the medical community’s needs, ensuring its technology evolves with the latest developments in digital pathology.
