The innovative potential of photonic technologies, such as Raman imaging, in improving cancer diagnosis and treatment has not gone unnoticed even by the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC).
EPIC highlighted the role of these innovations for medical applications by organizing a thematic meeting in November at the prestigious Antwerp University Hospital where it brought together experts from across the photonics and medical communities and discuss the latest advances in cancer diagnostics and treatment. Medical doctors and pathologists provided insights into the current state of technology and outlined their future needs, which served as a foundation for discussions with system integrators and manufacturers of laser and photonic devices. Together, they identified potential solutions to overcome existing limitations and improve cancer diagnostics and treatment practices.

Our project coordinator, Matteo Negro, and Benedetta Talone represented CRI at the EPIC Meeting by showcasing the work done by the CHARM consortium. In particular, he outlined how broadband stimulated Raman histology, a technique based on Raman spectroscopy, can provide highly detailed images of tissue samples, enabling pathologists to distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissues with high accuracy. One of the key aspects highlighted by Matteo is how the reliable and consistent data obtained by Raman spectroscopy can be exploited by AI. By incorporating AI-guided analysis into the diagnostic process, pathologists can receive objective real-time data that support more accurate and timely decision making in cancer treatment.
The meeting provided an invaluable opportunity for the CHARM project to engage directly with the medical community, particularly pathologists who play a critical role in diagnosing and treating cancer. The discussions that took place during the event allowed for a deeper understanding of the challenges and needs of healthcare professionals, which is essential for tailoring the CHARM project’s innovations to meet these needs effectively. The event also served as a strategic platform for building partnerships and collaborations that will be vital for the future success of the CHARM project.
